Shanghai Breakfasts.
One of the worst memories of Shanghai,
Was the horrible breakfasts we had.
We stayed in a hotel in Pu Dong,
And somehow it was impossible to find,
A shop that served noodles before 11am.
After one morning of hotel breakfast,
I decided to venture out for more local cuisine.
Instead of finding noodle shops,
All we found were western-style cafes.
As Mom had to go into the office promptly,
We settled for a shop called 烘培大师 (Careme),
Across the smaller lane from the Yaohan building.
Settling for the best of the undesirables,
I grabbed a ham sandwich and asked for a cold chocolate.
Mom got tuna sandwich and black coffee.
Some moments later,
The waitress served us at our table,
A hot chocolate and a black coffee.
After I told her that I ordered a COLD chocolate,
She went away and came back with the same cup of chocolate,
With a few cubes of ice dumped into the same old cup.
I would have gladly accepted this,
If I was sitting down at a neighbourhood kopitiam.
The problem is that this chocolate,
Is worth about S$4,
A price that deserves better service.
My impression of a cold chocolate,
Is that it ought to be blended in some way,
Not like the Milo that I get at a kopitiam.
She didn't even stir the drink,
Or pour the chocolate into a cold beverage cup!
When the stupid waitress asked us for extra money,
As the cold choc costs more than the hot version.
We questioned the manner she made the drink,
And she self-righteously argued that,
This is the way cold drinks are made in this cafe.
What total bollocks!
The argument went on for about 3 minutes,
Before the cafe manager came and apologised,
And said that she will personally make a fresh drink for me.
The manager eventually came with a chocolate ice blended,
Which looked much better than the horrible one the waitress served.
Even though it tasted diluted,
I am satisfied that the manager made this effort.
As for the waitress,
I hope they fire her,
To save their shop from future embarassment.
Or is there no such word as 'shame' in Careme's dictionary?
Shall complain about Island Coffee another time.
I'm easily tired of being annoyed.
